The whole idea is to do beard reduction on each pass, not try to get rid of all the hair at once. The muhle r41 and r89 are plated zamak. There are differences with steel razors in terms of things like feedback, but so minor as to be unworthy of consideration. Other design factors have more influence on shave characteristics. No, you can't lather with your fingers. At least not very well. A good lather is a mixture of soap, water, and air. Your fingers just aren't as good at stirring up that mixture as a brush is. That said, you don't need a lather. There are some decent of non-lathering creams out there.
